Characters Come Home to Disney-MGM Studios In "Disney's Mulan Parade"

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- At Disney-MGM Studios, Disney's newest animated film has gone from animation cel to animated celebration.

The cast of "Mulan" came to life as the skilled artists of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Florida, created the film before the eyes of theme park guests. Now the heroes and villains of "Mulan" return home to entertain guests in a daily parade through the streets of Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World Resort.

The parade debuted at Disney-MGM Studios on June 19, the same day "Mulan" opened at theaters nationwide.

"Mulan," the story of a courageous young girl who goes to war to save her father's life, is the first full-length film to be primarily produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, Florida. Since its opening in 1989, "The Magic of Disney Animation" tour at Disney-MGM Studios has been the only place in the world to watch professional animators practice their craft. An updated version of the tour opened this spring.

"Disney's Mulan Parade" navigates the streets of the Walt Disney World theme park in celebration of Disney's 36th full-length animated feature.

The comical and feisty Mushu leads the way. Mulan's "guardian" dragon screams and boasts as his rickshaw turns and circles through the streets, piquing anticipation of the performance to come.

The parade opens with a tribute to Mulan's Chinese home. A giant matchmaker leads the way, inviting everyone into her village. She is followed by a mystical ballet of future brides. Walking performers complete the scene, representing two tall pagodas and the moongate where Mulan and her father sit to exchange thoughts about the future.

The parade's pulse quickens as the brave warriors return from battle. The villain Shan-Yu has been captured and chained to create the victory float. Mushu, the once small yet confident character, has now taken the shape of the 150-foot-long Great Stone Dragon -- a 17-performer, winding and walking representation of the Great Wall of China. A collection of soldiers and concubines marches along, showing guests how they defeated the Mongolian invasion.

A celebration of victory then fills the street with performers from the Emperor's court. Acrobatic stiltwalkers, kung-fu performers and a fleet-footed Chinese "lion" weave back and forth across the route.

The grand procession continues with the heroes of the story. The warrior Shang joins Mulan, along with her proud father. All three ride high atop an elaborately decorated, horse-drawn carriage as they receive their heroes' welcome. The Emperor overlooks the end of the parade, watching the brave souls who have brought honor to their people.

"Disney's Mulan Parade" fills the streets of Disney-MGM Studios daily, with additional performances during peak seasons. The parade replaces the "Hercules -- Zero to Hero Victory Parade" which debuted in June 1997 with the theatrical release of "Hercules."
